Randall Frizzell of Nevada City is one of the most experienced arborists in California and has worked professionally for more than 35 years. He was responsible for the safe ascent of all three trees Saturday.

“I have a longstanding relationship with this park,” Frizzell said. “Patty asked me to help out with this project and I brought some personal climbing equipment and used grant money to purchase the rest.”

According to Frizzell, there were five main climbers. Kerr, himself, Austin De Rock of Grass Valley, Bryan Gray of Sonora and Russell Kramer of Vallecito.

“We had a few difficulties today,” Frizzell continued. “But we overcame and got it done.”

In order to scale the giant sequoia without leaving a trace, expert climber De Rock uses a special method that begins with a modified bow.
